Power in Partnership for Black History Month
ECF Achieves $200,000 Fund-Matching Milestone for Black-Led and Black-Serving Organizations.
During Black History Month, Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) is proud to announce that it has fulfilled its commitment to match donations to two very important funds that support Black communities in Edmonton to a total of $200,000. This achievement underscores ECF’s dedication to promoting long-term sustainability of initiatives that strengthen and amplify Edmonton’s diverse Black communities.
Half of the matched funds has been directed to the Edmonton’s Black Community Fund (EBCF), which was established by a group of Edmontonians in 2021 to address the unique needs of Black communities in our city. Additionally, the other half of the match was used to grow the Africa Centre Fund, further supporting impactful programs and services.
“By reaching this milestone, we’re helping to plant seeds for long-term support that will benefit generations to come,” Tina Thomas, ECF’s CEO says. “These endowments will ensure sustainable funding that can adapt to the evolving needs of Edmonton’s Black communities now and forever.”
Collaborative Funding for Black History Month Initiatives
On February 3, ECF participated in the City of Edmonton’s Black History Month Funding Initiative for the second year. This collaborative effort, in partnership with the Africa Centre, Edmonton Heritage Council, and the City of Edmonton, has provided $80,000 to amplify the voices and stories of Black communities. The Africa Centre has distributed these funds to support various Black-led and serving initiatives that celebrate the resilience, legacy, and achievements of Black Edmontonians.
ECF contributed $25,000 to this year’s initiative, building on the $20,000 it provided in 2024. Through these grants, 42 organizations across Edmonton have, and are, creating events and programs that foster education and awareness about the rich history and ongoing contributions of Black communities in the city and beyond.
“We’re proud to collaborate with our community partners to support the Black History Month Funding Initiative,” Tina Thomas, ECF’s CEO says. “This program is a vital way to highlight and celebrate the incredible contributions of Black communities in shaping Edmonton’s culture, history, and future.”
Year-Round Commitment to Equity and Inclusion
While Black History Month is an important time to reflect and celebrate, ECF’s commitment to Edmonton’s Black communities extends beyond February. Initiatives like ECF’s BIPOC Grants program has provided $2.5 million in targeted support to 120 Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour-led initiatives and projects since 2020.
Together We Thrive
ECF’s vision is rooted in collaboration and community building. By supporting initiatives like Edmonton’s Black Community Fund, the Africa Centre Fund, and collaborative funding for Black History Month, and ongoing support for various initiatives led by and for BIPOC communities, ECF reinforces our belief that together we thrive. Black History Month serves as a vital reminder of the profound impact of Black communities, but the work to build a more inclusive and vibrant city continues every day.
