Call for Volunteers: Community Grants Sub-Committees

Are you passionate about building a stronger, more connected community? Do you have insight into local needs and a desire to support meaningful change? Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) is looking for thoughtful and engaged volunteers to join our Community Grants sub-committees. If you're ready to help shape how funding supports local charities, we’d love to hear from you!

The Organization

ECF is committed to building a vibrant community and enriching the lives of all. We do this by providing an average of over $44 million in grants and student awards each year, thanks to the generous support of thousands of donors Of this, approximately $5 million is directed to Community Grants.  As the largest non-governmental funder of the charitable sector in our city, ECF is in a unique position to address community needs by working with donors, charities, volunteers, government and community partners. 

The Opportunity

ECF is looking for volunteers to join our Community Grants sub-committees! 

 As a sub-committee volunteer, you’ll play a key role in supporting local charities by reviewing grant applications and offering thoughtful recommendations to our Granting Programs Committee. 

 We’re committed to build diverse and balanced committees that reflect the rich makeup of the Greater Edmonton Area which includes urban and rural communities in Leduc, Parkland, Strathcona, and Sturgeon County. That’s why we strongly encourage applications from Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and members of racialized, linguistic, ethnic, 2SLGBTQIA+ and gender-diverse communities. 

We welcome adults of all ages to apply and especially encourage participation from those aged 18 to 35.

Commitment

As a Community Grant sub-committee member, you will: 

  • Review 10-15 applications per cycle using an online portal system and provide feedback before meetings (twice per year). 
  • Attend two in-person meetings each year (typically spring and fall) to help make funding recommendations. Meetings last about 3 hours, are held over lunch or dinner (meals are provided), and may be during or after regular business hours.  
  • Take part in 1-2 learning opportunities each year to build your knowledge. 
  • Attend occasional ECF events or informal gatherings to stay connected. 
  • Help make funding decisions, including in situations that not every application can be approved. 
  • Serve a term of up to three years, with the option to renew once (maximum of six years).

Candidates

We are seeking 2-3 new members for each sub-committee. The following qualities are considered an asset but are not required. If you’re committed to creating a community where everyone can thrive, we encourage you to apply — whether or not you meet every listed asset. 

All committee members should be comfortable reading applications, including written materials and some basic financial information from organizations and have internet and computer access.  

Arts, Culture & Heritage 

  • Knowledge of one or more areas of the arts such as performing arts, folk arts, literary arts, or culture and heritage programming. 
  • Experience working in or administering arts, culture or heritage organizations, including festivals.  
  • Knowledge of or experience working in the Arts, Culture & Heritage sector and the opportunities and challenges that organizations may face. 

 Education & Learning 

  • Knowledge of or experience working with youth. 
  • Knowledge of or experience working in the Education & Learning sector, with awareness of issues related to mental health, social isolation or employment pathways.  

 Environment & Animal Welfare 

  • Knowledge of or experience related to urban planning and sustainable community design, climate adaptation and resilience, or animal shelters and related supports.  
  • Experience or background in relevant fields such as engineering (e.g., civil or mechanical), with an understanding of infrastructure considerations related to environmental and community outcomes. 
  • Knowledge of the Environment & Animal Welfare sector and the opportunities and challenges facing organizations doing this work. 

Health & Wellness 

  • Knowledge of or experience related to physical activity and recreation for health. 
  • Knowledge of or experience related to primary and preventative health. 
  • Experience or Knowledge of or experience working in the Health & Wellness sector, including the systems and supports that influence physical, mental and social wellbeing. 

Human Services 

  • Knowledge of or experience with food insecurity, affordable and accessible housing, or work with inclusive communities. 
  • Familiarity with the Human Services sector, including the systems and supports that help individuals and families thrive. 

 First Nations, Métis, or Inuit (FNMI) Advisory Committee  

  • We welcome First Nations, Métis, or Inuit (FNMI) individuals who bring lived experience, cultural knowledge or leadership with Indigenous communities. 
  • We value a range of experiences, including community leadership, volunteer work, cultural roles, and professional experience supporting Indigenous communities, organizations, or initiatives. 
  • Members will help provide guidance from Indigenous perspectives, including sharing insights on community priorities, relationships, and the realities shaping Indigenous-led work and initiatives.

Location & Accessibility  

In-person meetings will be held in our downtown office. There is free parking to accommodate cars. ECF is also within walking distance (7 min) of the Bay LRT station and ETS bus stops
