Senior Investment Analyst

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Senior Investment Analyst will play a key role in supporting the management and growth of Edmonton Community Foundation’s (ECF) endowment and other investment portfolios, which have over $800M in assets under management (AUM). This position ensures the accuracy of investment performance reports, aids in investment manager research, and helps manage day-to-day investment operations. The Senior Investment Analyst works closely with the ECF CFO and Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) to align ECF’s investment strategies with its broader mission of maximizing community impact. 

Key Roles & Responsibilities: 
  • Investment Operations: 
    • Collaborate with the CFO to manage day-to-day tasks required for the prudent investment of the endowment and other ECF assets including monitoring cash flows, executing transactions, and processing capital calls and distributions. 
    • Support Investment Committee meetings (eg. quarterly), ensuring timely and accurate reporting. 
    • Liaise with ECF’s OCIO, investment managers, custodians, and other external partners to manage the logistics of day-to-day investment operations.

 

  • Research and Analysis: 
    • Support the CFO through analysis of investment performance, asset allocation, manager performance, risk management, and financial trends. 
    • Ensure investment manager and other relevant external reports are reviewed and ECF stays up to date and informed about the current state of investments. 
    • Attendance at investor meetings and industry events as an ECF representative to stay informed on market conditions, investment trends, and risk factors. 
    • Using both quantitative and qualitative data analysis, create reports on investment manager performance.

 

  • Reporting and Communications: 
    • Generate and distribute regular (eg. monthly, quarterly, annually) and ad-hoc investment performance, asset allocation and rebalancing, and compliance reports.  
    • Compile and distribute routine presentation materials and investment reports, including performance summaries, asset allocation, cash balances, asset accrual data, etc. 
    • Assist in creating public performance summaries and contribute to the development and maintenance of ECF’s investment communications.  
    • Prepare investment related materials to support external presentations, strategic planning, budgeting, and audits.

 

  • Governance & Compliance: 
    • Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of all investment activities. 
    • Draft and update operational procedures and governance policies related to investment management. 
    • Assist the CFO in monitoring and ensuring compliance with ECF’s investment policies, procedures, and relevant legal or regulatory requirements. 

 

  • General Investment Support: 
    • Assist in processing alternative investment capital calls and distributions, as well as traditional manager withdrawals and deposits.  
    • Assist in managing existing investment vendor/manager relationships to ensure effective collaboration and communication; support new vendor/manager recruitment as needed.  
    • Ensure completion and submission of routine investment related forms (eg. annual global tax renewal, withholding forms). 

The Ideal Candidate

As the ideal candidate, you will possess the following qualifications: 

  • University degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field. 
  • A minimum 5 years of directly related work experience (eg. investment administration/management, performance reporting). Equivalent combinations of related post-secondary education and directly related work experience will be considered. Candidates who do not meet the minimum work experience requirements may be considered at a lower classification and/or salary level.   
  • Professional certification (e.g., CFA) or progress toward certification is an asset. 
  • You are a proactive and detail-oriented individual with strong analytical skills combined with sound financial/investment literacy.   

Additional requirements include: 

  • Solid understanding of investment and portfolio management principles. 
  • Familiarity with financial markets, investment instruments (equities, fixed income, alternatives), and risk management practices. 
  • Understanding of relevant legal and regulatory requirements related to investment management, including tax regulations, fiduciary responsibilities, and industry best practices. 
  • Proficiency in using investment management software, financial modeling tools, and advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial analysis functions). 
  • Experience with performance reporting, compliance monitoring, and reconciling investment data. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team. 
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills, with a proven ability to synthesize complex data into actionable insights. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders, including non-financial professionals. 
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with external partners, including investment managers, custodians, and consultants. 
  • Ability to identify potential challenges and provide innovative solutions to enhance investment processes and performance.

What we Offer

  • Salary Range: $66,000-$90,000/year.
  • A 35-hour standard work week.

  • A hybrid work environment where employees collaborate on site a minimum of 3 days per week with the flexibility to work remotely up to 2 days per week.
