Needs and Gaps in Edmonton’s LGBTQ Population

Canada’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) population continues to face challenges, despite changes made to legislation since the 1970s that are meant to protect them.

The Edmonton community is no exception, and as a community foundation, it is our responsibility to ensure we are always understanding the needs of Edmontonians.

We commissioned a report to identify the key needs of Edmonton’s LGBTQ population and any gaps in service they’re experiencing. This report helps us understand where funding might provide lasting solutions for them.

The research aimed to answer these three questions:

  1. What are the specific needs of the LGBTQ community that are not being met?
  2. Are there gaps in programs and services within the larger Edmonton community, and if so, what are they?
  3. How can existing community support services be more responsive to the needs of the LGBTQ community?

The report was prepared by the Edmonton Social Planning Council and presents findings in the following areas:

  • Cultural Competency and Sensitivity Training
  • Program Access
  • Program Diversity
  • Program Sustainability
  • Program Collaboration and Partnerships
  • Health Care
  • Housing
  • Athletics and Sport
  • Networks and Mentorships
  • Employment and Professional Development
  • Newcomer Supports
  • Public School Supports
  • Legal Supports
  • Media Representations
  • Prevention Efforts
  • Research Dissemenation and Continued Research
