Funds In Memory

In Memory of Georges R. Brosseau K.C.

1932-2024

Georges R. Brosseau, K.C. of Métis ancestry, was born and raised in St. Paul, Alberta, attended the University of Alberta and obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree and then his Bachelor of Law Degree in 1954. He was admitted as a lawyer to the Alberta Bar in 1955 and was appointed as Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) In 1972, (now K.C., since the Queen’s death), for his contribution to the legal profession and to public life. Georges practiced law for 69 years, until his passing at 92 years of age in June, 2024.

Georges was a Trustee of the Edmonton Catholic School Board from 1966 to 1974 and he served as the Board Chair from 1967 to 1973. In 2005, Georges received the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of his outstanding service to the people of Alberta. In 2017, Georges was inducted into the City of Edmonton’s Community Service Hall of Fame, in recognition of his exemplary achievements and contributions to the citizens of Edmonton.

Georges, like his father Alphonse, valued the importance of education and was a staunch supporter of Alberta’s Métis Community. Georges (with Dr. Herb Belcourt and Orval Belcourt) was one of the three Co- Founders of the Belcourt-Brosseau Métis Awards program in 2001; the largest non-government source for Métis post-secondary education funding in Canada.  Recipients of the BBMA Awards can use their award funds for tuition fees, textbooks and supplies. Since 2002, over $10.5 million in awards have been distributed to over 2,600 Métis students. The BBMA Awards program provides financial support so Métis people can access post-secondary education and realize self-sufficiency, achieve their highest potential and enrich their lives and the lives of their community.
