Michael had the opportunity to live in numerous communities in Canada and to travel the world during his lifetime. He was employed in the health services sector, addictions and mental health, and worked in halfway houses, federal prisons, residential and non-residential treatment, as well as information management. He was also a member of the Army Reserves and did tours of duty in Bosnia, Sudan, and Afghanistan, as well as an instructional assignment in Ghana and Kenya. These experiences left him with a lasting impression of poverty, homelessness, mental health and addictions issues.
