Peter Elzinga Family Endowment Fund

Peter Elzinga is an Edmontonian and proud Alberta resident. He was an elected Member of Parliament for 12 years and a Member of the Legislature of Alberta until his retirement in 1993.

In 1994 the Peter Elzinga Family Foundation was founded and registered as a charitable association. This Foundation was created for the purpose of promoting the advancement of education and learning.

In September of 1995 four $1000.00 scholarships were given out. Since 1995 scholarships have been awarded annually to 4 or 5 worthy individuals.

In addition, the Peter Elzinga Family Foundation gave a one-time donation of money to NAIT and NorQuest College for the establishment of scholarships which are given out on a yearly basis.

The objective of the Foundation is to provide scholarships, bursaries, and other financial assistance to individuals who are in pursuit of post-secondary education, academic upgrading, retraining, or special needs education. Awards are granted based on financial need, community involvement, and leadership skills with the intent the applicants’ program lead to recognized degree, diploma, certificate or license.

In 2022, Peter Elzinga Family Foundation Board of Director’s decided to turn the management and awarding of funds over to the Edmonton Community Foundation. As of January 2023, applications can be submitted through Hilltop Awards and Bursaries.  Please click here Peter Elzinga Family Endowment Fund Award  if you wish to apply for an award from the Peter Elzinga Family Endowment Fund.

Criteria

To be eligible to receive an Award, the Student must:

  1. be a resident of Alberta; and
  2. provide proof of enrollment within a Qualifying Program at a Qualified School in Alberta; and
  3. demonstrate financial need that limits the student’s ability to undertake the desired program of study.

Preference is to be given to more mature Students who desire to further their education, including but not limited to re-training, upgrading of work skills or a change of employment.

The fact that a student receives other bursaries, scholarships or awards does not prevent a student from benefiting from an Award but may affect the comparison of that student’s financial need to another student’s financial need.

A student that has received an Award for a prior year is not prevented from receiving an Award for a subsequent year.

Academic achievement beyond reaching the entrance requirements for the desired program or to continue study in the desired Qualified Program is not required.

No amounts will be provided as an Award for a successful Student until such time as the student is:

(a)        accepted into the program of qualified study; and

(b)        enrolled in the particular term of study.

It is contemplated that in most cases, the Award amounts will be provided directly to the Qualified School the Student attends.

As the fund balance continues to grow; additional awards will be available to help individuals pursue their educational goals and continue learning.
