Rahim Jivanjee Rahemtulla Endowment Fund

One of the indications from Rahim to his family was to spend time and energy towards good deeds and charities. When we reflect on what he did and what he believed in, it was to help the needy by feeding the hungry and providing comfort to the homeless.

Rahim was also a regular blood donor and an advocate for organ donation to help improve and save lives. He was kind and compassionate and a true giver.

He lives in the hearts of many and continues to give for the good of others.

His fund will assist people living in difficult circumstances including, but not limited to hunger, homelessness, poverty, natural or manmade disaster or violence and giving priority to providing food, water, clothing and/or shelter. The fund will also assist people towards education especially to provide opportunities for a better future.

The Fund has contributed towards:

Warm meals at Hope Mission

Tegler house warm dinners for youth

Kids in Action lunches in schools for children

Islamic Family and Social Services (IFSSA)

Annual granting to Crestwood School Student Council in perpetuity

Providing healthy options in groceries to registered families on Fridays during the month of Ramadhan

University of Alberta Faculty of Agriculture, Life and environmental sciences: providing appropriate apparel for children to have safe and comfortable experience during their educational camps at the Botanic Garden.

It is with pride and love that the Rahemtulla Family, the University of Alberta and the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative announce the creation of Rahim’s Khair. Rahim’s Khair is in memory of Rahim Jivanjee Rahemtulla. Rahim was dedicated to serving the community and passionate about food justice. He believed in the right that all people have to culturally appropriate, nutritious and dignified food.

Although Rahim is no longer physically with us, his shared values of shared humanity, dignity, sustainability and food justice are at the heart of Rahim’s Khair. Khair in Urdu loosely translates to “good” and “blessing” in english, and captures these foundational principles that Rahim had and wished to see in the world.

Rahim’s Khair’s overarching mission is to increase food security among immigrant and refugee communities experiencing chronic poverty and includes four components:

  • A Bulk Purchasing Cooperative
  • A Collective Kitchen Facilitator Training Program
  • Intercultural Youth Collective Kitchen Workshops and
  • Rahim’s Cookbook
