Sian … her name is Welsh-Gaelic and means “precious gift of God”. She was precious beyond words.
In 1985, Sian – aged just 7 months — was diagnosed with primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNT). Doctors thought the cancer started in her pancreas and spread through her bloodstream, and by the time the tumour was discovered, it had already spread to her liver, spine and legs. Sian fought bravely, undergoing chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatment, but succumbed 11 months later.
Unfortunately, Sian’s story is not unique. There are far too many youngsters who spend their childhood in hospital beds instead of a playground. The Sian Bradwell Fund for Children with Cancer has been established to provide a reliable source of funds from which the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation can provide priority medical equipment for the Haematology-Oncology department, with the hope that children can stop being patients and get back to being just children.
